  • What's in the gallery Christmas pics?

    • drawings and photos of THE Santa Claus (there is only one Father Christmas, the others are wrong ...), his sleigh and his reindeer, gift boxes , snowman, Christmas tree with garlands and other decorations, as well as expressions like "Merry Christmas!"

    • Good to know: the sleigh is pulled by nine reindeers called Tornado, Dancer, Furie, clothes, Comet, Cupid, Lightning, Thunder and Rudolph.

    • Children, don't forget to hang nine carrots the fireplace, otherwise there will be jealous!

  • Can I add other galleries available on this site?

    • Yes. All galleries can be mixed, but most interesting are certainly "New Year 2010", "Smileys" and "Love."

  • And insert my private pictures into the mosaic?

    • Yes. Example: add the photo-portraits of your children, merged with the proposed Christmas photo gallery.

  • An idea of a personnalized mosaic?

    • Send by e-mail your invitations with an attached Christmas photo-mosaic.

It is now accepted that the story of "Father Christmas" is as follows:

Santa Claus comes from Saint Nicolas

    Saint Nicolas icon
  • The story of Saint Nicolas is older than Santa Claus and is based on true facts. He lived around the year 250 (AD, it goes without saying), and named Nicolas of Myra, a bishop of the region of modern Turkey. He was known for his generosity, protection of children and weak people. Under pressure from the Roman, he was forced into exile for a moment then return to his country.

  • Nicolas of Myra had passed away December 6, 343 and buried in Myra. Its legend of good angel and healer growing up, he was consecrated Saint Nicolas.

  • In 1087, his bones were stolen and sent to Bari, Italy. They were then transferred to the Duchy of Lorraine (a region of actual nord-east of France). A basilica was built in his name at Saint-Nicolas-de-Port. His fame is such that he became the "Saint Patron" of Lorraine.

  • Since, Saint Nicolas's Day is celebrated on December 6, date of his death.

  • His reputation has spread well beyond the Lorraine and continues to this day to be highly celebrated in Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria and northern France. It is sometimes even more famous as Santa Claus, considered as too artificial.

  • In classroom, children receive this day a gingerbread (or a bun) and an orange. This may be surprising, but this gift is very popular with children, however accustomed to more sumptuous gifts (and sometimes less useful) of Christmas ...

  • He is represented sitting on his donkey (or on a white horse, according of the region), with a beard, a stick and red bishop dress.

  • During the sixteenth century, Protestants tried to forbid its celebration, which did not prevent the continuation of tradition, including in Netherlands, where he is called "Sinterklaas" ... oh ... like that name reminds me of something ...

Christmas' day

    Baby Jesus icon
  • It is the birthday of Jesus of Nazareth, called the day of the Nativity. The date of December 25 was finally chosen among several proposals around the year 270.

  • An ancient festival in Europe was around the winter solstice, to scare away the demons of the night by begging from door to door. This pagan festival was revived by the Church to celebrate Christmas.

From Saint Nicolas to Santa Claus

The first Santa Claus was in blue or green
  • Dutch who settled in the United States, kept the tradition of SinterKlass, which quickly took the name of ... Santa Claus.

  • The writer Clement Clarke Moore wrote in 1821 a Christmas story called "The Night Before Christmas." One can see a Father Christmas on a sleigh pulled by reindeer. He also published on December 23, 1823 "A Visit from Saint Nicolas," which told the story of elves who distributed gifts to children through the chimney. They traveled in cart pulled by 8 reindeer. Clearly, these two stories have begun to create an amalgam between San Nicolas and Santa Claus.

  • In 1863, "Harper's Illustrated Weekly" more accurately describes Santa Claus. Santa Claus is dressed in BLUE or GREEN costume with white fur, a white beard and a wide belt. The character is jovial, smiling, stout, and accompanied by 8 reindeer. (It is more and more clear ...). Then in 1885, the paper describes the habitat of Santa Claus, located in the icy North Pole, where it has its manufacturing of toys made by his elves.

  • That's what Father Christmas lived during about half a century.

  • Notice that in 1939: A ninth reindeer, Rudolf, has been added to the head sled, to illuminate the path with his bright red nose.

From Santa Claus ... to Santa Claus

Santa Claus in red and white costume
  • In 1931, Haddon Sundblom, a draughtsman of a famous American firm of soda (ones that we found the name is very strong ...) is to draw Santa Claus in the image of the brand, drinking a bottle of coc.. (oops...) During his tour sled. Personnally, I would have rather seen a vodka bottle, especially in winter...

  • Haddon Sundblom was the brilliant idea of a Santa Claus dressed in the red and white colors of the brand.

  • Despite protests from Catholics (like, funny that ...), Father Christmas has definitely became a super international salesman!

The future of Santa

Mother Christmas in sexy green clothes
  • It has long been part of our economic system based on growth, and as such can be a victim. To cope, he should focus more on quality gifts, selected for their simplicity, durability and emotions, not only on their market values, which makes the happiness of the auctions web sites, from December 26...

  • Interested by ecology, he tends more and more to wear his green costume again. Did you noticed that?
